Tresor present yet another alias from Heinrich Mueller - real name Gerald Donald. The legendary Detroit producer has been behind some of the most impressive, immersive and cutting-edge electronic music to emerge from the motor city; Dopplereffekt, Drexciya, Elecktroids, Arpanet,Der Zyklus, Glass Domain, Intellitronic, Japanese Telecom, Rudolf Klorzeiger, Z Therapy, Abstract Thought, Daughter Produkt, Flexitone, Gedankenexperiment, L.A.M., NRSB-11, Zerkalo, Zwischenwelt.

This new project is a single 30-minute piece which was originally commissioned by ArtCenter South Florida in Miami. If you skipped geometry class, fear not as Donald's sounds require no understanding of his concepts to be enjoyed. Sit back as three dimensional shapes plot new trajectories as they emerge from the speakers.

8/10 Ant Staff review, 28 March 2018

XOR Gate is a new alias of Gerald Donald. If I have to tell you who this man is, then quite frankly, your existence thus far has been a monumental failure. If you’re looking for some sort of credible, valuable critique of this record, then you’ve so come to the wrong place. If someone as much as mumbles the words Dopplereffekt or Drexciya I get excited. If there was a recording of him spilling his pint on his synths and falling asleep with his butt cheeks on the keys - I’m the hopeless saddo that would buy it and get all buzzed up looking at the spine of it nestled next to my Arpanet and Der Zyklus records.

‘Conic Sections’ is a single 30-minute piece which was originally commissioned by ArtCenter South Florida in Miami. It’s interesting knowing he’s venturing into the world of sound art and installations as a lot of his work has often felt like it could have been custom built for a science museum or planetarium. This is really lush stuff that has that magical quality of sounding very simple, almost rudimentary at times, yet loaded with emotion despite the fact that the concept is something that would seem quite dull and sterile in terms of having any emotional resonance -  think of how Kraftwerk made the concept of Radioactivity sound so romantic.

It contains many hallmarks of a very mysterious sounding Gerald Donald production - pristine, icy, glassy, crystal-like synths twinkling, bleeping and fluttering in all the right places. You’d be forgiven for thinking this was Dopplereffekt’s follow up to the ‘Cellular Automata’ record, yet there’s something different happening under this new alias that sets it apart. Like all of his work - each record is a microcosm - a component in the macrocosm that is the larger, ever-expanding musical universe of this visionary artist. ‘Conic Sections’ has an effect on me that I often get from his beatless tracks, and that is one of altering the perception of scale. When I listen, I feel really microscopic, like I’m some tiny particle - yet not insignificant -- like a subatomic particle that’s a key component in some kind of quantum physics experiment on a journey through time and space.
