This new project from Massimo Pupillo (Zu, Laniakea), Luciano Lamanna and Roberto Zanisi sees the trio create three heady ambient soundscapes. The division of labour is thus: Lamanna brings the modulars, Zanisi handles guitar as well as an array of Mediterranean string instruments, and Pupilo’s bass moves in and out of the mix. What the trio end up with is equal parts Coil, Californian New Age and seashore ambience. Out via Karlrecords.

8/10 Robin Staff review, 01 March 2018

About Creta: don’t turn them off straight away. Here I’m extending the definition of “straight away” to include “within the first four minutes”, because it’s ambient. Give them a chance and they will rain melody: this triforce of contemporary musicians including Massimo Pupillo, Luciana Lamanna and Roberto Zanisi evolve their drone tone into a record of toe-dipping beats and guitar strums, getting noisier and noisier as they become altogether more lyrical in their playing.

“... And Everything that Shines” feels like a chilling movie soundtrack paired with electro acoustic horrorscaping, its mix of gorgeous guitar picking and beatwork eventually evaporating for an odds and ends pluckathon of raindrops and empty office electronics. Just as Creta stretch and sustain, they also bear witness, allowing sounds to jitter and get jammed. It’s sci-fi: both the official score and the sound effects that rumble through the scenes.

Highly recommended for those who like their weird to come with a temperament: spanning dark ambient, new age and a whole lot of contact noise, this record is something to treasure -- and one very easy to lose track of.
