Fred Welton Warmsley III aka Lee Bannon aka Dedekind Cut further refines his ambient (previously released on Hospital Productions and Hollow Ground) into more graceful, serene terrain and has found a suitable home with Kranky.
The ghostly choral vocal wisps on opener ‘Equity’ are like wandering through an abandoned cathedral, while ‘The Crossing Guard’ feels like glimpses of ancient ruins viewed through dense fog, partially punctured by emerging sunlight. The titular track takes its name from a local mountain lake which where presumably the recordings of trickling water were sourced. The Mournful strings create a classical, grandeur, almost sorrowful beauty and widescreen scale. ‘MMXIX’ is a trip into what could be a lost civilization, complete with some sort of arcane throat singing. The emotive ‘De-Civilization’ has a cinematic, Lynchian feel before we head into the cascading darkness of ‘Spiral’.
The occasional field recordings scattered throughout the album only offer slight clues as to location. We’re never really sure where we are on this record. None of the classical, more epic sounds are overused, so before things head too close to generic classical infused, cinematic, cookie cutter ambient - we’re plunged into the depths elsewhere. It’s this sense of mystery and things dissolving before they become wholly tangible that makes the album involving. For sure it's all pretty chill, but there’s this sense of something lurking in the distance, just out of grasp that warrants a few repeat listens. There’s both darkness and radiant light to be found in ‘Tahoe’, but its ultimate appeal it what lies behind the curtain. Locations, lifeforms and objects are glimpsed through misty skies. Whether we’re in the past, present or future remains a mystery.
