Since we started our #namethenewguidedbyvoicesalbum hashtag Guided By Voices album titles have become really boring. Here's the latest one  - 'Space Gun'. 'Reversed Hen Tsunami Plot' will just have to wait I suppose. This is the third from the new classic GBV line up which includes such future legends as Mark Shue and Bobby Bare Jr. We're told Robert Pollard's songwriting has reached new heights of brilliance on this one. Hope so.

"The best album they've released in months" so says some comedian on the internet.  Well this is definitely the best Guided By Voices album since 'How Do You Spell Heaven?' not including the Cash Rivers album which...well you wouldn't would you?

It continues HDYSH's move towards concise power pop and as a result leads to a situation where having moaned about Guided By Voices albums being stuffed too full of out-there experiments I'm now about to moan that their records are sounding just a little dull and homogenised. 'Space Gun' continues a move by the band back towards the kind of music they made during their 'Isolation Drills' era. Pollard now has another crack band in tow if one that lacks something of the idiosyncracies of the Sprout/Mitchell/Demos/Pollard/Fennell line up.

That said their are myriad examples of lovely jangly power pop such as 'Ark Technician' and the ridiculous 'I Love Kangaroos' while the the Who ish prog of 'Liars Box' harks back to the 'Sand Box' era of the band. The brilliant shards of genius that once regularly emanated from Pollard's pen are getting increasingly scarce. Instead we are getting bursts of enjoyable if not wholly inspiring music. Similar albums such as 'Earthquake Glue' took a while to grow so further listens will be required in order to see if Pollard's hooks hit hard and true this time. At times it seems that they are fast becoming a kind of lo-fi Status Quo churning out album after album of nothing disastrous to a slowly diminishing fanbase but an even bigger moan would occur if they weren't around at all.
