8/10 Robin Staff review, 01 March 2018
Oscillation frontfreak Demian Castellanos made a gem of a record in his first Kyvu Tapes edition, exploring discrete and personal takes on the cosmic with homespun drones named after his boyhood village. In a side-project I’d argue is greater than anything his full band have ever done, he offers another record of impacting psych compositions, here using another mix of treated guitars, e-bows and horns to abstract emotive hints of melody.
Kyvu Tapes II further develops the subliminal beauty of Castellanos’ kosmische; the record’s opener, a drone with chance jitters of rhythm, is sonorous and spacious, but has hints of something almost narrative in its backdrop, brightening up into something as euphoric as a Myrorrs raga. “Transparent Landscape” is a mix of sci-fi swell and simmering drone heat, with chords whining into action for a drone that can’t decide whether it’s ominous, inviting or a little pinch of both.
It’s another golden collection of the great work Castellanos’ can do at the most minimal end of the psychedelic spectrum -- these pieces are warm, weird and delivered with an odd intimacy, as if the listener were being invited to look through a friend’s old scrapbook. Only the loveliest of space drone.
