Black Mecha is the most recent incarnation of the black metal rooted noise monger Fortress Crookedjaw (Sean B. Campbell) of aural terrifiers Wold. Whilst still very much harking from the black metal world, Black Mecha focuses more on electronics, imagine Ildjarn with a modular synth. Still horrible, and almost zero production values. Dark, distorted, analogue fury.

He makes tantalizing and grotesque black metal under the harshest of his guises, Wold, but Fortress Crookedjaw (yes!) also does electronic dabblings as Black Mecha. It is no nicer and on no level more polite; in fact, on ‘Counterforce’ he plays loops synthlines and booming bass drums off against each other into a horrifying infinity that would make Aaron Dilloway want to hide under his pillow.
These are long, gnawing electronic experiments more flailing in discipline than they are danceable. They gesticulate way over the point, but Crookedjaw occasionally throws out melodies amidst the thrashed about noise -- if only to twist the knife into it with a furious, almost aggressive sense of repetition. Using a textural palette not dissimilar from Wold -- shoddy sounding in production and as opposite as it can be to ‘lush’ on the spectrum -- these pieces are kinda made for you to despise.
Such is the Wold m.o., and why not: it’s a fine collection of noise cuts to DJ between sets at your local grindcore party, or to put on when you’re feeling like being both blasted by noise and moved by rhythm. Bless this mess.
