Anthology Recordings shine a light on this little known group of Philadelphia / New Jersey synth explores that were active from the late 70s through the early 90s. It’s a valuable and ultimately highly engrossing collection of material compiled from their many self-released cassettes. Their brand of Space Music draws from the previously established roots of classic Berlin School artists like Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream etc. but they really have their own thing going too. Apparently realised through all night, improvised sessions - it’s absorbing, high-grade Kosmische music that’s vividly psychedelic and should appeal to fans of Popul Vuh, Cluster, Pauline Anna-Strom etc.
It seems pretty incredible that I’d previously never heard of these guys. If you’d have asked me who The Nightcrawlers were, I’d have said that beyond irritating 90’s dance music abomination responsible for ‘Push The Feeling On’. These guys really do deserve a fresh audience beyond hardcore collectors and Kosmische experts. Speaking of which, this gently hypnotic collection of trippy ambient lozenges includes a 28-page booklet of ephemera and liner notes by journalist and Kosmische expert D. Strauss. Recommended.
