Tom Greenwood and Michael Whitaker, the constant that Jackie-O Mothetfucker revolves around take their time over things these days. Both living in rural corners of California, the pair made their first album in seven years, Bloom slowly. It took three years to record, with Greenwood and Whitaker assembling a cast of new musicians to work on the project. The reverb drenched, delicately structured songs reflect the time taken and the locations the band mates now call home. LP and CD on Textile.

8/10 Robin Staff review, 03 May 2018

Ah yes, the swear band. I always have time for them. Their name is a great deceit considering how I have always very much enjoyed their music and found none of it to be cussworthy. On the new and extremely floral ‘Bloom’ they make music that does at least fit album description: their mix of wobbly acoustic drones and ecstatic mumbled rock songs forges a middle-ground between personal and communal bliss, offering the listener solo ruminations and hand-holding singalongs.

They make a shambles sound serene: their guitars often sound whine too long, or stutter towards their finish, but they always retain a calming earthiness, often moaning over the point as if they were a bit more stretch of grass than you could see on the horizon. On “The Wreck”, they improvise rushes of percussion, twitching strings and languishing chords, as if creating a soundscape before turning it into a song proper. It climaxes from its Dirty Three style meditation into an ecstatic noise anthem, retaining melody and structure while freaking out in a sunrising abyss.

If you like to hear records get made up in real time, this one feels perfect: there’s narrative and lore built in to Jackie-O records, their music sounding off like old, mantra-filled folk songs being countred with jazzy, noisy, everything-upside bluster. It will sound familiar, but broken too, and its beauty lies somewhere in the middle.
