Shadow People is the fifth album proper by Perpignan’s hazy psych-pop duo The Liminanas. Their sound is harks back to Serge Gainsbourg’s work with female vocalists such as Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin. Needless to say, then, that they exude cool. 180g vinyl LP, in a gatefold sleeve, and CD on Because Music.

Area People Do Something Psychedelic. Hardly breaking news anymore, but may I please report to you that Perpignan psychlords the Liminanas have released a new record, their fifth, and you can listen to it? If you’ve not already been indoctrinated, their melodic, pop-leaning approach to making jams is quite a marvel. The duo seesaw like children of the jam, moving between bubblegum and gloom in an endless trade of hazy chords, shrill keys and sleuthing rhythms. ‘Shadow People’ is my favourite yet -- it’s no frills psych rock, and how often can you speak of that?

A victory lap is on order for this record’s middle passage, which sees them create a Brian Jonestown Massacre adjacent jam with Anton Newcombe, a folkgaze lullaby with Emmanuelle Seigner, a beaming sunshine hit worthy of Broadcast’s perpetual motion with Bertrand Belin, and even a jolly post-punk jammer with that ol’ hat of hats, Peter Hook. As other alt-rock icons celebrate the Liminanas, so do the Liminanas celebrate life, bringing their sound up in glorious hi-def multicolour for a record that’s positively beaming into your areas.

For those who want to hear a bit of pastiche Liminanas, you’ve got one like “Motorizatti Marie”, whose piano tumblings and cold-stare riffs combine on top of a pacey drumbeat to create the feeling of a Western standoff sped up in 1.5x speed. “Trois Bancs” is another steamy, psych-tributing classic of wahing guitar and illusive time delay. All in all, it’s the Liminanas, baby, and did I even need to write anything else?
