Nyege Nyege Tapes are based in Uganda, but this compilation focuses on the exciting Singeli scene currently exploding across the border in Tanzania. Sounds Of Sisso centres around one of the scene’s focal points, Dar Es Salaam's Sisso Records studios, and the bright young things who stalk the corridors there. The music? Well, imagine (if you can) a combination of Balani Show, bashment, trap, Shangaan Electro and gabber with MCs who sing-rap in double, triple and quadruple time. Getting the idea? No? Just listen to it, it's really something.
This one has sold out on all formats. Sorry!
8/10 Ant Staff review, 11 January 2018
‘Sounds of Sisso’ is a fourteen-track compilation surveying the Tanzania Singeli scene via the Sisso Records studio. A window into an underground sound emanating out of East Africa and a record which for many will be as revelatory as the Gqom Oh! or Rephlex’s Grime compilations.
This music is absolutely crackers; an intense, high octane ride through tempo obliterating rapid-fire beats, ridden by MCs chatting at a furious pace to match. It’s like some mutant strain of Shangaan electro, dancehall, happy hardcore, gabber etc. like eating ten bags of sugar washed down with a pint of pure adrenalin. Tracks are relentless, dense, frantic, urgent, and celebratory in that they are most definitely constructed for losing your shit and dancing like a lunatic. My heart is about to explode just thinking about how these people get down and party. The energy these artists have is just off the scale; Bwax ft S kide, Dogo suma Lupozi, Dogo Niga, Dogo Mudiy, Mshamba Wa Kideo, Ganzi Mdudu, Makaveli, Maseke Pasopa and Mako, Csso, and Suma all bringing absolute mayhem.
