8/10 Staff review, 08 January 2018

Wouldn't it be nice to have some peace for a bit? Away from the bombardment of all those things the modern world can lash at you? Well this album by Visionary Hours is the perfect antidote to everyday sonic overkill and makes you want to go and sit in a wooded glade for awhile.

It's not surprising that Visionary Hours leader Hayden Berry resides in the rural idyll that is Hebden Bridge. 'Beyond the White' would be the perfect soundtrack to a sun-dappled walk around Hardcastle Crags. The album has simple but effective guitar lines seemingly carved from wood over which a series of guests add their thing. Bruno Sanfilippo, Richard Youngs, Western Skies Motel, Isnaj Du and Richard Formby all appear on the album colouring in the spaces left by Berry's pretty but minimal guitar patterns. Youngs zither is particularly effective on 'Away Into Endless Spaces' whilst minimal cello lines add weight to the utterly gorgeous 'Empty Hills Just After Rain'. 'Where the Wind Sharpens the Goodbye' is perfect minimal acoustics with bass clarinet combining with the gently plucked guitars. You can almost hear the wind in the trees.

If there is one album I'd pick to compare this to it would be Western Skies Motel's 'Settlers' album but whereas that album evoked the plains of the American mid-west, 'Beyond the White' could soundtrack a slow meander through England's fine fields.
