This ten track release from Tyler Childers is highly anticipated and features plenty of pretty famous musicians helping out - such as Russ Pahl on the Jews Harp. Purgatory is released on vinyl LP and CD and is released on Hickman Holler Records. Get your hands on these fast, because they'll certainly sell fast!
7/10 Robin Staff review, 11 January 2018
Country music: watch how much nobody in this concrete industrial slab relates to it. This latest offering from Tyler Childers is an unfathomably breezy affair, its joyous twang, hello-I’m-Johnny-Cash basslines and fun fiddles all amounting to far more saccharine content than we are accustomed. Within his first all-smiles song, Childers offers this testament of blessings: “Damn good gig, good damn crowd -- good God, for crying out loud!”. For crying out loud!
Absolutely he made this in Nashville -- why would you even ask? This record’s filled with every single hallmark, either from the state or its wonderful, glorious imitation TV soap opera of the same name. It’s chock full of the questionable miserabilia (as on the slow, waltzing but somehow super sugary “Tattoos”), the barn-burner dance-offs (“Purgatory”, oh my goodness) and the light storytelling from out in the wild (“Banded Clovis”).
'Purgatory' largely sounds like an attempt at ticking off the reference points of a signed and sealed genre, but it doesn’t do a bad job of it. Childers is convincing as both a wholesome, idealised country boy, as well as the heartland and radio-ready iteration of it that often makes the larger strides. Considering that its bold, affected twang makes it sound like the Edge had a feature on it, “Universal Sound” has an apt name indeed. As either version of his beloved music, Childers fits right in.
