Compilations don’t get more all-encompassing or definitive than this: nothing less than a time capsule that attempts to represent the sounds and diverse musical cultures of Planet Earth in the remote chance that it may be encountered by an alien intelligence.
The Golden Record was compiled for inclusion on 1977’s two Voyager spacecraft by a team led by Carl Sagan. There’s a lot of Bach and Mozart, but also many examples of traditional and tribal music. Chuck Berry is the sole representative of the rock era, and Blind Willie Johnson’s wordless Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground is an inspired choice.
