'Red Lantern at the Kallikatsou' is the wondrous result of audio unearthing, processing and augmenting, building on a mysterious cassette tape from 1986. Coming into existence under The Chi Factory, this release is a heady ambient brew, evoking Thomas Köner and FSOL's slowest and calmest moments.

Easily confused, I can't quite get to the bottom of what these the Chi Factory recordings are. What it seems to be is a long term collaboration between original Chi Factory leader Hanyo Van Oosterom and the ambient world's favorite Rod, Rod Modell of Deepchord. These two longform pieces have all the usual tones of the latter artist in evidence. Atmospheric swirls of blissed out dubby ambience seemingly made underwater. But using the tapes from the 30 year old experiments of Van Oosterom seems to give a more organic feel to Modell's oeuvre.
The first piece swirls around lost in a kind of tropical fog until finally shuffling beatwork is exposed amid the bucolic rubble. The second piece is a slower build up of near industrial clatter. This is what you'd hear if you put the sound of Sheffield circa 1950 through a reverb unit. Kind of eerie and with the lost sound of forges swirling through the mist, sunlight seeps through as the track progresses to reveal a tumultuous pulse of sound and hidden voices. If you adore the sound of Deepchord and associated projects this is well worth checking out.
