Spacious and claustrophobic at the same time, DJ Spider & Franklin De Costa's 'F Planet' gives us grumbling, percussive techno, rising and dipping in sonic height. The free manipulations lend the tracks a unique sense of life, patches of noise here, wild frequency and filter shifts there, evolving in two directions at once. Includes a killer remix by the mighty Shifted (Avian, Mote-Evolver, Hospital Productions).

New York producer DJ Spider and German producer Franklin De Costa have combined forces in the past for a pair of EPs on Killekill. They’ve reconvened for a plate on the ever-reliable Berceuse Heroique for a couple of superb, sci-fi techno cuts. First up is the excellent ‘F Planet’ which is like cruising over a decaying future cityscape with neon lights illuminating and piercing through the fog, while a bunch of wasted droids are sniffing robot drugs in the back seats. Sparks are practically flying off the bassline on this track, and the dirty spitting acid gurgling away is magnificent. The whole thing comes off like some kinda debauched freaky cyberpunk scene outta 2000AD. The remix from the mighty Shifted (Hospital Productions, Avian, Mote-Evolver) is colder than a witch’s tit in a mid-winter Berlin techno dungeon. Proper Death Star walls closing in on you, claustrophobic business. ‘Astral Pilot’ gets all cyberdelic with loads of weird sounds that I have no idea what they are floating around over the core of a stomping kick and dirty bassline, with lots of intricate little percussive sounds adding momentum and some strange, eerie creaking. It’s techno Jim, but not as we know it.
