Been awhile since we heard from Cornelius but this album of his smooth, exploratory pop has been knocking about the office for some time and we can confirm that it's pretty good. His part cover here of Prefab Sprout's 'Appetite' points the way on an an album of intricate, soft and masterful compositions

- Mellow Waves by Cornelius
We've had a promo of this knocking around for several months, played it umpteen times but by the time the record finally hits the shelves we've lost it. So I'm going to try to review the record from memory.
It's not as crazed as his other work and showcases a soft style of beautifully understated synth work and instead of smacking you in your face with sonic trickery, 'Mellow Waves' uses a subtle approach. I'm reminded sometimes of the Notwist but also of Prefab Sprout particularly on 'In a Dream' which appears to be a slight rewrite of McAloon and Co's 'Appetite'.
It's a quiet and considered listen with the occasional startling change in tempo just to surprise you when you are getting too comfortable.

Mellow Waves is an apt name for a slow and contemplative album, not quite as fun as his previous efforts, but certainly more solid than the the last effort. Yes, all the trademark stereo panning and sonic trickery are present, but they work towards a different end. I can't help but hear Arto Lindsay's influence on this as it almost seems to come straight from his catalogue. Either way, Cornelius is still very much at the top of his game and this is a very welcome addition to my music collection.
