Originally released in the early nineties, Leo Anibaldi's 'Muta', is an odd, atmospheric adventure in warped electronica, dark ambient and post-industrial techno. The reissue brings the strangely cinematic material up to modern audio standards, polishing the woozy soundscapes and frenetic beats for modern ears.
This one has sold out on all formats. Sorry!
9/10 Ant Staff review, 15 November 2017
In a career spanning some twenty-six years, Italian techno legend Leo Anibaldi has released tons of 12”s but only made three albums. His second, ‘Muta’ was originally released on ACV way back in 1993 -- three years before his amazing ‘Void’ album came out on Rephlex. Widely regarded as a classic and long out of print, electronique.it has kicked off a new imprint called Lost In It for this much-needed vinyl reissue. I’ve not heard this album in a very long time but listening now, it’s easy to hear why Aphex Twin / Rephlex would pick him up for the follow up…
The first tune is an infectious, eerie, slow-moving industrial hip-hop like creeper with skeletal drums and apparition-like vocals, and still sounds great 24 years down the line. Then we get the trippy/zoned ominous dark ambient soundscapes, doomy sub-bass and phantom-like howls of the second cut, before the shadowy, black hole techno/electro mutant which follows. Twilight sound design and a spiralling TB-303 propel the fourth untitled track in classic early 90’s acid techno mode - think The Kosmik Kommando’s ‘Macrocosm’ from the same year. A Whispered vocal and whistles carry the dream-like Artificial Intelligence flavoured electronica of the next tune. Then we get some juddering drums and hypnotic, slowly simmering acid. Then the tempo increases for a high-octane, driving acid pounder complete with subtle futuristic sounds lurking in the distance. The final cut is a proper head-nodder that moves with a particularly satisfying 303 bassline, sparse/crisp drums and is animated with avian-like chirping melodies.
‘Muta’ sounds both of its time and futuristic at the same time - basically, this is what we thought 2017 would sound like back in 1993. Great to see this made available once again with original artwork and mastering and pressed on 180g wax.
