Justin K Broadrick is obviously no stranger to darkness and violence. On this full length foray into distorted, swampy techno, direct references to his environment and the threat of a self-imposed antibiotic apocalypse inform a bitter, unpleasant album, growling and scraping its way along a grey street.

The vinyl edition of JK Flesh’s (aka Justin Broadrick of Godflesh, Jesu, Final etc.) ‘Suicide Estate’ comprises two EPs, originally issued in 2016 as limited edition cassettes on Hospital Productions. Both EPs now arrive on a coupla slabs of wax for the first time. If you don’t already know, JK Flesh is the big fella’s industrial leaning techno alias - previous releases have been on Downwards, 3BY3 and Speedy J’s Electric Deluxe label.
Across eight cuts he explores themes of battleship grey urban life in the tower blocks and estates of his native Birmingham and the grim possibilities of a future where humans are immune to antibiotics.
Banger ‘Bayley Tower’ kicks things off nicely - a fine, distorted, bleak techno cut with marching momentum and big gloomy synth hovering over like a dense black cloud. Next up is the heavy, chugging downer dub of ‘Tamiflu’, followed by possibly my fave track on the album, ‘Stoneycroft Tower’ with its itchy groove, proper darkside, searing bassline, and caustic, spitting synth. ‘Holbrook Tower’ comes like a swarm of disease carrying insects. ‘Squalene’ stutters and squelches along with nasty intent and ‘Ethylene Glycol’ hovers like a virus searching for a host to infect. Then we get the claustrophobic, paranoid, suffocating atmosphere and tribal drums of ‘Bromford Bridge Estate’ before closing track ‘Thimerosal’ paints a bleak futuristic vista, like a droid stomping through and investigating the wreckage of an apocalyptic landscape.
