The Soap Opera are a bright, sparky, even sugary-sweet indie-pop proposition. FOr their first album they offer up eleven tight little tracks that are bursting with light psychedelia, tropical flavours and 80’s UK-style indie. From France! Ready To Hatch is a vinyl release courtesy of Ample Play.

How sad we would all be if it weren't for indie pop. It's just so damn perky.
The Soap Opera are the latest to worship at the C86 altar but they also go back all the way to 1967 to the sort of sunny side up pop manufactured by the likes of Love and the Lovin' Spoonful. Their sound is crystal clear and full of trebly guitars...'Unspeakable' sounds like Orange Juice on the beach and is a lively slice of short-trousered arch indie pop. 'Humanatee' has the same kind of surf guitars as early Real Estate and Best Coast, the variance in styles suggests a number of songwriters at work but largely it seems to be the work of one person rejoicing in the name Bloody Bulga. This Bulga person gets it right on tracks like 'You Caught On Fire' which wander about like a sun-dappled Monochrome Set.
It's resolutely upbeat. No sad here and though there's one or two tracks that seem to zip by without leaving an impression there's some very good stuff here, full of the kind of plangent, romantic guitars we learned to love in the 80's.
