Atom™ continues his series of lieder-influenced albums, in which he engages with the tradition of German song in a typically Raster-Noton style. With singer Lisokot on side, Walzerzyklus is a set of waltzing songs designed from the Atom™ palette of crisp and clear electronics. Released on Raster Music.

8/10 Staff review, 10 January 2018

Uwe Schmidt is still doing his thing as Atom™ -- that’s nice to know, isn’t it? -- still in a Raster Noton style (without the Noton, of course) -- lots of lovely, quirky and bloopy electronics, the occasional bonkers keyboard… and the wall white noise which greets the listener on the lead into the opening track.

A tide of of harsh, loud static made me wonder if our review CD was faulty, but my fears were quickly dispelled upon the swift ushering in of throbbing bassy synth and drones we may have come to expect, but.. what’s.. this? Song? Amongst the metallic rhythms? Yes, Uwe is still very much in love with the German tradition of Lieder and here, he has brought in the very pretty voice belonging to Lisokot.

Lisokot, who gently caresses every vowel sound on -- amongst other songs on this mini-album -- ‘Be Bop A Lula’ -- as first made famous by the rock ‘n roller Gene Vincent in the ‘50s, of course. She also duets with an android on the Kraftwerk-ish ‘Transhuman Melody’. There are scary robot-battle noises on ‘Leitmotif II’ and then, on ‘Maschinenwalzer’, punishing industrial beats pummel you into submission before that soothing voice returns. The washing machine at home has a similar effect on me. Something for all the family then, good stuff.
