Frank Zappa’s Zoot Allures (what an incredibly Frank Zappa title for an album) was released in 1976 in the midst of some legal stresses. Frank’s intense guitar stylings are at the centre of the album’s sound, which seems to have learned lessons from heavy metal and applied them to the weird world of Zappa. Reissued to vinyl by Universal.
7/10 Jack Customer review, 28th November 2017
The individual musicianship and ensemble playing on this album is out of this world - Bozzio positively burns and the fact that Zappa played most of the instruments on the album is also impressive. My favourite tracks include the instrumental jazz rock of Black Napkins, Friendly Little Finger, and Zoot Allures. Zoot Allures in fact sports only three instrumentals, including the outstanding Black Napkins, which onstage over the years became a showcase for FZ and whatever musicians were working with him at the time.
