7/10 Staff review, 08 November 2017

The soundtrackers of that famouse internet TV series are here taking a step back while the money rolls in from Stranger Things 2 to release an album without even trying. Instead, they’ve asked some buddies called Lena Willikens, Not Waving, Sam Haar and FKA Twigs impersonator JK Flesh aka Justin Broadrick to make their music better.

If that was too hard to decode, then here’s some clarity: it’s a remix album. The John Carpenter-esque synths be a-flowin, but this time have been turned upside down by a variety of hosts. So first we have Lena Willikens turning their stuff into a slightly more upbeat graveyard stomp, like the Carpenter merged with Ben Frost in a parallel slo techno dimension. Things get even slower and more Boards of Canada for Not Waving’s take on ‘High Rise’ giving me a queasy feeling like Will Byers barfing slugs.

The B side contains the party tune courtesy of Sam Haar of Blondes fame. It’s one of the more adventurous repurposings of the Survive material, lots of synths being stretched to the point of shimmering or pitched way up all under the rule of a proper 4x4 thud. Finally the Jesu guy makes a super slow beat for creepy, gnarled synth tones to wander over with a sprinkling of piano.

It’s actually pretty nice overall, and more varied in sound than I thought it would be, but I don’t think it’s doing anything particularly groundbreaking for the remix format. That Sam Haar one would be fun to mix with though, or perhaps you’d like to start your set with Lena Willikens’ take ?
