With needlepoint precision and a crystal clear veneer, Sugai Ken brings his dynamic yet delicate tapestries of artificial and organic sound to Rvng Intl. His previous outings on EM Records and Lullabies For Insomniacs have helped shine a light on the illustrious sound design feats the Kanagawa, Japan-based artist is capable of. This album builds on that reputation with some startling excursions into audio collage.
8/10 Jamie Staff review, 17 October 2017
Sugai Ken has a habit of creating intricate yet startlingly vivid tapestries from a deep well of culled threads -- however, UkabazUmorezU is his first sound collage for the big dogs at RVNG Intl. It’s a delicate yet vibrant beast; the strands pulled together with such precision that the whole feels organic, breathing, a near-conscious entity.
The record truly shows off Ken’s sound design skills and compositional chops. Electroacoustic resonances are placed next to found sounds and field recordings; minimal components are juxtaposed to create his unique collages with repeated elements and startlingly stark voices, percussion and kaleidoscopic keys. Lush.
Funds from the record have been set aside for earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan.
