Amazingly finding time to produce new music in between appearing at every single festival and club this summer, Hamburg’s finest Helena Hauff hops from Werk Discs to Ninja Tune proper with a new single. As you might well expect, industrial, electro and acid influences splatter across this muscular batch of top-shelf dark room bangers, but with plenty of light and mischief thrown into the mix to keep things fresh.

8/10 Staff review, 26 October 2017

German DJ and producer Helena Hauff is back on Ninja Tune with a tidy 4-track EP of analogue tracks, apparently improvised and recorded at her studio in Hamburg. There’s no doubt the lady knows a thing or two about programming the Roland TR-808. Her beats are super crisp on the melancholy ‘Nothing Is What I Know’ which is somewhere at the intersection of sci-fi/Detroit electro and coldwave with its longing melodies and sparse, hushed vocals. The gritty ‘Do You Really Think Like That?’ captures the energy of her improvisation - a rugged post-Drexciya style electro-techno jam with zapping acid. ‘Continuez Mon Enfant Vous Serez Traité En Conséquence’ sounds like a lost early I-f circa ‘Portrait of a Dead Girl' or even Beverly Hills 808303 track. Pure filth and distortion with caustic, bubbling acid which could have fallen off of the back of her EP on Panzerkreuz. Definitely one for the Dutch West Coast/Bunker/Acid Planet heads. The rawness continues on the tape saturated ‘Gift’ that comes like a way scuzzier Dopplereffekt / Elecktroids mutant or some eroded, decaying lost Kraftwerk demo exhumed from a sewer. You can definitely hear her influences in these tracks, but like all of her stuff, she really adds her own voice and emotions to that inspiration. She also really embraces the characteristic sounds of her machines - devices she’s clearly spent a lot of time tweaking. No frills, raw, electric Dame-Machine music.
