Istikhbars and Improvisations is a 1965 session recorded in Paris by Mustapha Skandrani, a notable practitioner of Algerian music. The release is made up of traditional vocal pieces transposed to the piano, which are then used as the basis for modal improvisation. The performances are crystal clear, making for a very special listen. CD and LP reissue on EM Records.
