New Grooms! The New Yorkers haven’t been spotted in full-length format since 2015, but when they decided to rectify that, they didn’t waste time: apparently Exit Index was mostly recorded in a six hour session. Exit Index is indie-rock squeezed through an array of juicy effects pedals, sourced through frontman Travis Johnson’s co-ownership of Death By Audio. On Western Vinyl.

Continuing their trend of releasing a full-length record every two years are Grooms -- ostensibly a highly melodic indie band featuring Jay Heiselmann (array of guitars, bass and effects pedals), Steven Levine (drums) and Travis Johnson (frontman, showmanship, easy vocal style).
Those melodies, then: they’re pretty darn lush; check the opening salvo of ‘The Directory’ kicking off the record with U2-ish guitars and ‘Horoscopes’ with its propulsive drums and chunky electric bass. Reminding me a little of Tame Impala here. Boy, the production on this is slick; there are extra layers of synths, reverbed up to the eyeballs for that extra bit of psych-pop flair on the slow-burning ‘Turn Your Body’. Onwards… ‘Magistrate Seeks Romance’ -- yeah, and someone to ‘rock out bigly’ with by the sounds of things. Exit Index is all good, infectious fun, then. It’s swish.
