The Punishment of Luxury is OMD’s thirteenth album and the third since their reformation in 2006. What Have We Done? is the lead single and an example of the group’s bleeping synth pop. It’s the band’s first single with Paul Humphreys on lead vocals for over 30 years and heart wrenchingly it's about him having to put his dog to sleep.

6/10 Clinton Staff review, 20 December 2017

The last time Paul Humphreys sang on a significant OMD song it was 1981's 'Souvenir'...probably my favourite OMD song. Hearing it now makes my back go all funny with memories of childhood. It's bloody gorgeous. I remember seeing them play it in Newcastle a few years ago and seeing his little face light up when milking the rapturous applause. Thirty six years later Humphrey's gets his second chance and this time the inspiration comes from the difficult decision of putting his dog to sleep.

As a customer of ours pointed out OMD possibly should have been put to sleep many years ago but with Christmas just around the corner this is very hard to hate. It's twinkling synths are perfect for the Christmas season and there's a nice catchy synth riff that leads the whole thing off. It's not much of a song though  - after the opening verses it just repeats the title over and over again with no sense of crescendo. Still, it's Christmas. Shame proceeds couldn't have gone to the Dogs Trust or something as that would have been nice.
