8/10 Ant Staff review, 23 November 2017
This first-time vinyl edition of Cosey’s 1982 cassette ‘Time To Tell’ has been given the deluxe reissue treatment it deserves; remastered and edited from the original audio tapes, pressed onto clear vinyl, and comes housed in a gatefold sleeve with gold foil block title. It includes a reproduction of the magazine that was included with the original tape on Leeds label Flow Motion. In fact, my good pal Dave took a photograph that was included in that magazine and it was him that first introduced me to this album. This vinyl edition includes the track ‘Time To Tell’ which did not appear on the original tape, but was included on the later CD version. However ‘Such Is Life’ from said CD edition does not feature on this vinyl edition.
Cosey once said that “My life is my art, my art is my life”. This is particularly apparent on the beautifully evocative ‘Time To Tell’ track, where her candid account of her “erotic sexual occupations” is spoken over sensual, flickering and glistening silvery synth tones in her charming mild Northern accent. For whatever reason, my cat Xena seems to delight in nestling up next to me to this tune. The heavenly ambient electronics sending us both into a state of pure bliss. The ghostly ‘Ritual Awakening’ moves at a similarly graceful pace - a stark contrast to the percussive energy of Chris & Cosey’s ‘Trance’ from the same year. Here, her voice is like pure silk and has an almost ASMR like calming effect. The exquisitely delicate and slightly New Age ‘The Secret Touch’ takes sparse liquid synth washes that move like a gentle tide beneath almost tropical guitar and blue cornet. It has me thinking that this could be what Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Albatross’ would sound like played at a tenth of its intended speed.
Great to see this album made more widely available - it’s the perfect thing to play in the background while you read Cosey’s recent autobiography.
