8/10 Staff review, 10 October 2017

There's a very good chance that Husker Du are one of those 'you had to be there' bands as often listening to them now it's very hard to work out what the fuss was about. They regularly had one great song out of every five, are pretty straight down the line compared to the soon-to-be-big Husker's influenced Pixies....then there's that drum sound...let's not talk about the drum sound.

But perhaps in the early to mid 80s a band that combined melodies and pace were something as yet unseen. Eventually they played at blistering pelt but the early songs on this treasure trove of recordings trudge along at bar band pace but as you work through the collection they pick up speed and the thrill of their blitzkreig live shows is easier to see. Finally on 'You're Too Obtuse' the clever chord changed matched with lightning speed playing is firmly in evidence. The band then released their debut single 'Statues/Amusement' which saw them play more in a Joy Division/PIL style and these two tracks alongside 'Outside' are utterly brilliant examples of sludgy post punk  - particularly 'Amusement'  -where in God's name did they record it? Sounds like a sewer.

From there the band decided to launch full tilt into the post hardcore rattle that led to classic albums such as 'New Day Rising' and 'Zen Arcade'. The collection is the sound of a band finding their feet and eventually after a few false starts find their signature sound. It's an absolutely fascinating journey  - not always made up of quality music  - but they get there in the end and there are loads of hidden gems to be found. An essential historical document but aimed at serious fans only.
