Sarah Records stalwarts return older and more wizened but still with that happy-go-lucky charm intact. Their original singles were just perfect (see the Nothing Ever Happens 7") but it was their album Feral Pop Frenzy that almost crossed over with it's unabashed pop joy married with an oddball experimental bent. Will be interesting to see how they fare in 2017.

Still sad? Don't hang around on these then!
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 09 October 2017
Well first up they made my favourite EP ever with their 'Nothing Ever Happens' EP back in 1990 - the amount of times I must have played that thing. Back then they promised something quite extraordinary but if their one full length 'Feral Pop Frenzy' suggested that they could have been the next Saint Etienne then it was probably being on Sarah Records that held them back. Just look at the video for 'Drown'. - Sarah Records bands just don't behave like that.
So, many years later Even As We Speak are back with a short running EP. The initial two songs 'Clouds' and 'Our People Travelled Many Moons' are both lovely jangly things that showcase how indie -pop starlets can mature gracefully. Mary Wyer's voice is as sweet as ever but these tracks really glisten and slowly unfurl their charms with layers of distorted guitars and stacked up acoustics. Having stretched out gracefully the band then retreat to the colourful neon pop of 'Feral Pop Frenzy' on the bouncy 'Such A Good Feeling' and the odd child-like indie of 'Slugman'. It almost seems that there's a forced jollity to these tracks that wasn't in evidence on the opening duo. I know which I prefer though as we all know it's not nice to be sad at an indie disco and Even As We Speak have always had a kind of glitterball feel to them.
It's good to have them back - I feel there's more to come though. I enjoyed the reflective tracks a lot, less so the bouncy ones..but I'm always happy to see old indie-poppers having fun.
