8/10 Ant Staff review, 07 September 2017
High Boys are Skull Defekts members Jean-Louis Huhta (aka Dungeon Acid) and Joachim Nordwall. They recently had a 12” on Hoga Nord and are back with an EP on Nordwall’s ever reliable iDEAL Recordings. They’re not working in Skull Defekts “rock” mode here -- this is dread filled acid/techno doom - so basically think Dungeon Acid style grotty, squelching, 303 and sizzling ripping synth with some of Nordwall's heavyness - he succinctly describes it as “Claustrophobic industrial acid”.
Crawling opening cut ‘Dead Zones’ creeps and fizzes along with suffocating spoken word with a 303 that sounds like it would dissolve flesh and bone. The drowsy ‘High Boy Acid’ is slow motion, comatose, bunker acid filth with booming drums that are almost like a dub bassline. It trudges along in wonderfully heavy, sludgy, threatening fashion with tension filled/restrained acid that never even considers climaxing. The ice cold ‘March of the High Boys’ as the title suggests, has a sparse marching rhythm that just kinda plods along really with some sounds sweeping in and out and some dubby effects. It’s almost like a deadpan pastiche of Berghain minimal techno with a real miserable downer vibe. Kinda reminds me a little of old Plastikman too.
