Robert Johnson’s Faustian pact is probably the defining myth of rock ‘n’ roll. This compilation of his 1936-37 singles is worth hearing for that reason alone. If you go in for that sort of thing, it was also ranked the 27th greatest album of all-time by Rolling Stone in 2003. Either way, the songs here all have an eerie power that is only heightened by the crackling mono recordings.
