Randow is a regular podcast show about a village that sits next to a space-time hole where a city used to be. Basically, LOST in a forest. On soundtrack duty is prolific darkwave/postpunk songwriter Vlimmer, this time reining in the songcraft to make some droney dark ambient atmospheres to accompany an eerie and unsettling story.

Blackjack Illuminist Records are opening the portal into the heart of darkness, once again. Don’t be fooled by the lovely illustration on the inside of the cd’s card sleeve: our eyes survey the idyllic scene: a painting of a family enjoying a picnic in the Austrian air; like one of those old railway posters depicting rural Yorkshire, only transposed to the Alps. Vlimmer (Alexander Leonard Donat) usually tells his stories through synth-based songcraft with a post-punk sensibility; here, he channels his deepest and darkest, yet still melodic, drone-wave side on a soundtrack to a podcast and audiobook: this is Randow.

Delicate strains of hushed ambience usher in a work that soon becomes eerie of atmosphere and intense of layered drone. The drones build dramatically, then quieten for moments of extra tension and impact, then come creeping back with extra malicious intent. It becomes quickly apparent that there’s a lot more going on under the surface of this particular village. It exists in a breach in space-time where perhaps Vienna might have been. Icily eerie sounds are accompanied by bursts of spoken word (I hope your German is good). But it doesn’t really matter what’s being said, it’s all very creepy and atmospheric. It’s something Freud would very likely have called “Unheimlich”... uncanny.
