Third album from the Anglo/American collective Memory Drawings, featuring members of Hood, Manyfingers, Brave Timbers and Movietone. Pushing their exquisite dulcimer/guitar/violin sound deeper into the heart of post-rock (with nods towards Bark Psychosis and Tortoise courtesy of the polyrhythmic playing of newly-joined drummer Chris Cole) these beautiful cinematic compositions perfectly soundtrack the onset of autumn. All versions include a bonus remix album featuring Isnaj Dui, Edward Ka-Spel, Robert Rich, Leaf Library, and more.

9/10 Staff review, 18 September 2017

Memory Drawings are such a wonderful conundrum. A band of grayscale shadow-makers, they’re complemented with colourful musical timbres, their sound something like a heavy fall of snow coating itself over green grass. Their two previous records were melodic meditations that never got too grandiose, instead ruminating on compact post-rock melodrama. On ‘The Nearest Exit’, their third and most meticulous record, they work with a sort of symbiotic melancholy to make a tenderly moody soundscape.

It’s a setup quite unlike any other: Richard Adams’ (ex robot-cryers Hood, currently of the leaflorn Declining Winter) plays muted guitar patterns with an understated pulse while dulcimer frontman Joel Hanson plays with the full spectrum of his instrument: an emotive and rhythmic performance sees him add flurries of panic to the band’s sense of resignation; it’s all augmented by strings from Sarah Kemp of Brave Timbers, whose work is sharper and more dramatic than anything else around her.

Where Memory Drawings once sounded like a group working a score together, ‘The Nearest Exit’ sees them doing a band: with drumming and extra instrumentation from Chris Cole (Manyfingers)and Gareth Brown, they grow songlike things, making a record of ballads that drive their own narrative rather than serve someone else’s. “Time For Something More” is the fullest they’ve ever sounded, its twinkling chords, weeping strings and barely-beating guitar heart suggesting a whole life lived. Their music has always been beautiful, but this beautiful? Don't bring tissues; bring a towel.
