Juliana Giraffe and Ari Bazoulian who make up Midnight Sister are described in the press release as “intense creatives” - a daunting prospect but a tag they want to cement on Saturn Over Sunset. It certainly has plenty of gorgeous instrumentation from a wide array of classical and vintage electronic instruments, all of which come together to create a beautiful and charming pop album with a ‘60s psychedelic waft.
Available on vinyl LP or CD.

Sleek and enjoyable 60s influenced pop music that has lots of keyboard and therefore sort of places it in between the worlds of Maston and Quasi. These are discofied takes on classic pop with nods to St Etienne and Birdie. Tight and compressed with cleverly orchestrated arrangements. The amazingly monikered Juliana Giraffe has an excellent voice that has shades of Laeticia Sadier, Karen Carpenter and Astrud Gilberto and shines on the excellent 'Showgirl' which brings a new slant to the sort of music High Llamas have tried to make over the years. A coagulation of exotica and late 60s Beach Boys pop the song has music concrete intervals, some beautiful strings in it's episodic approach.
And it's not alone. There's lots of goodness here for fans of orchestrated chamber pop music. If you like the quirky and exotic side of Stereolab there's a lot of good ideas you might like packed in here.
