Forced Witness is the latest album from Alex Cameron who has had a little bit of help from his friends with this one; including Brandon Flowers of The Killers, Weyes Blood and Angel Olsen. Having jetted about between Vegas, LA and Berlin to record the album, let’s hope it’s worth all the greenhouse gasses it must have produced. Let Cameron’s sultry, building, groove-infused songs be the soundtrack to the climate induced apocalypse. Cheers Cam.
Available on vinyl LP, CD or Cassette Tape.
5/10 Clinton Staff review, 06 September 2017
Who is this guy? He may look like an ageing horse racing/gambling addict but he sings the sorts of songs you heard on the Chart Show in 1987 - the ones that bored you a bit when waiting for the one second clip of the Sugarcubes (if you were lucky).
He has a grainy voice that matches his pallid skin tone and on the Corey Hart-ish 'Country Figs' fires quickfire words over some reasonably assured heartlands rock with some dangerously prominent bongos. The album is full of 'Tunnel of Love' era keyboards and safe as Richard Marx melodies with pumping sub Springsteen choruses where 'money is in the trunk' and 'we're running out of luck'. But you know what? I'm fucking tired of irony. It comes as no surprise that Foxygen are involved in this shambles. It has their nod and a wink jokiness all over it.
Amongst this there are a few moments where Cameron shows that he really wants to lay this persona to rest and get on with just singing his affecting and sometimes uplifting songs but he's stuck. He has adopted a persona of a failed musician but the real tragedy is without this smoke screen he'd be literally nothing. He has to keep on doing it and make it cheesier each time or it's back to the investigators office. He's Steve Coogan in an alternate universe where Tony Ferrino had been a success.
