8/10 Ant Staff review, 17 August 2017
Harry Bertoia’s sound sculptures are beautiful looking and sounding things. If you copped that ‘Sonambient’ 8CD box set on Important Records you’ll know what I’m talking about. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Lichens, OM, 90 Day Men) spent some time with them, and this LP on Demdike Stare’s DDS label is the result. When it kicks off with Lowe playing/recording the sculptures (metal rods and gongs), they do sound magnificent - but you get the impression that they’d still sound as distinctive and glorious if an infant child were to do the same. But as the record evolves he really does utilize them in a different way to Bertoia, adding in subtle layers of other worldly vocals, as heard in some of his Lichens productions. This really takes things somewhere else - leaving a haunting impression of vaporous apparitions wandering through the sculptures, which in turn feels like the sculptures could be resonating themselves. Lowe fully realises the sculptures are the star of the show, and sensitively retains all of the inherent character of their sound. His deft sleight of hand and vision creating something like a fantasy Bertoia and Lichens collaboration. Edition of 500 copies.
