8/10 Jamie Staff review, 09 August 2017

“This ain’t how California’s s’posed to sound!”, my inner Sunshine Boy cries out in horror. Jokes, man. It’s SanFran / Bay Area’s finest fuzz-drone-beats purveyor, co-founder of the mighty Anticon and generally very smiley guy Odd Nosdam (David), of course and some delightful but deceptively heavy electronic textures to brighten up your inescapable Drizzly Days.

And yeah, it starts out (to my ears at any rate) claustrophobic and foggy. I checked my headphones and everything, and it’s all working fine. Dave’s all minimal ambient these days; like his near-neighbour bvdub ('Brock' to Dave), but with the sometime syrupy romanticism stripped away. Throughout LIF, Odd has gone about his cloudy abstractions in a systematically austere way; his M.O. being: to process those tones through fx... fx.. FX, muthafuckas! Ladle those electronic vibrations with tape-delay and static, stat! Make sure it all tremolos up the yin yang, yes! Add distressors, space echo. Reverb like a bad boy! It all makes for a journey through some gorgeous textures and shapes.

Suddenly, just as things get all dreamy and you’re in your own little headspace, a processed foghorn sounds through the haze. And it all echoes round my head like 10 mini-Basinskis constantly rebuilding each other. So, yeah. Thoroughly hypnotic stuff all round. Fully deserves an ‘8’. And the sun’s trying really hard to make an appearance, too. Magic.
