Canadian producer Antwood had several releases on netlabels such as B.YRSLF Division and Cocobass before being snatched up by Planet Mu. Returning with his second full length album, Sponsored Content pulls back on the footwork flurries leaving spacious delicate compositions with equal punch. FFO Arca.
8/10 Laurie Staff review, 21 September 2017
Ah, it felt like only last year that I was sitting in this exact chair, with these headphones on, listening to Antwood’s debut album with joy and confusion plastered over my face. That’s because it was last year, indeedy, a few months over 1 year ago Tristan Douglas of Canadian fame made his first public announcement, a decree of scattershot electronics blowing you across the planet at a remarkable speed.
On Virtuous.Scr, his charting of Hessle Audio-meets-footwork was a jolting ride through varied fragmented electronic textures, with a strong rhythmic backbone. This one continues down that path, with perhaps a little less beat-driven material and more strange animalistic sound design. Say what you like about No Man’s Sky, but this record is like hopping from planet to planet in that game, absorbing all of the sounds of the local creatures and distilling that experience into a 40 minute album on Planet Mu.
This record seems to deal with targeted advertising on the web; in fact, when I searched for more info on this record, Google’s algorithm picked up on the words ‘sponsored content’ and decided to give me a sponsored advert trying to sell me sponsored advertising. Jeez. On the album, it’s manifested in several computerised voices trying to sell you their product, which I do enjoy. Right now, someone’s pretty distraught, sobbing into a vocoder, and probably with good reason. Sponsored Content is like Oneohtrix Point Never meets Arca meets Ssaliva. And it’s great.
