Fresh from making waves with releases on Knekelhuis and Contort Yourself, as well as with his projects Volition Immanent and Sige Bythos, Parrish Smith brings us his Esplendor on L.I.E.S. Four heavy but varied tracks: from slow, sexy EBM to Belgian Klang to classic bangers, this EP has the grooves and the mesmeric rhythms.

To follow on from an office conversation yesterday, this isn’t an alias of Theo Parrish. It also isn’t this Parrish Smith, a rapper who is actually from the Long Island area. This Parrish who is releasing on Long Island Electrical Systems (what a pickle) seems to hail from the Netherlands, making lightly menacing and abrasive techno-ish things with undeniable levels of danceability. That’s a difficult thing to pull off, achieving some level of textural rawness without sacrificing leg movements. It veers from trashy, barbling synth-led electro (‘Espendor’) to super slow industrial stomps on A2, all with a signature sizzle, an overdriven quality to most of the sounds, even the kicks. I’d describe this as a less exuberant Hieroglyphic Being. The B side starts to sound like Robocop wandering through a toxic wasteland. Nice.
