Their Satanic Majesties Request - 50th Anniversary Edition by The Rolling Stones

Following the hullabaloo about the 50th Anniversary edition of the Beatles 'Sgt Pepper's...' we now get a bespoke four disc re-vamp of their great rivals the Rolling Stones similarly ambitious Their Satanic Majesties Request. This was the album in which they experimented with psychedelia, sound effects and unconventional song structures. Bonkers and groundbreaking.

Unlike many 50th anniversary reissues this one doesn’t come with a slew of ‘bonus’ material. Personally I think that’s a very good thing but it’s pretty clear listening to the music that the Stones probably struggled to scrape together the necessary tunes to make the album in the first place. That said it is a terrific album and a great reminder of the last time the Rolling Stones sounded ahead of their time.

Classics such as 'Sing this All together’ and ‘2000 Light Years From Home’ with forgotten gems like ‘Citadel’ and ‘She’s A Rainbow’ make this a genuinely enjoyable listen. There’s even the added bonus of hearing John Lennon in the mix. For my money the Stones’ finest album with not a wasted track or with all wasted tracks depending on which way you look at it.
