Copenhagen's Papir are a skilful, youthful three-piece practiced at semi-improvisational psych. V has C Brøchmann on complicated drumming, N Sørensen's fuzz guitar channeling his love of ancient rock and Manuel Göttsching; and C. B. Clausen’s bass covering a wide sound palette. An hypnotic noise recalling Can or electric Miles. Cosmic drones, man. Mixed by John McEntire. 2x 180g LP with download code or double CD format, on Stickman.

Hailing from Copenhagen, Papir have built a following over the past few years with their semi-improvisational psychedelic soundscapes. The trio’s fifth full-length, aptly named ‘V’ is kinda like a compressed soundtrack of a summer day from dawn to dusk.
The album awakens with “V.I” with a calming carefree hook that unfolds into a jazz-tinged jam. Unlike a lot of psychedelic rock albums in recent year, ‘V’ doesn’t have a single harsh moment throughout its 90+ minutes. Songs such as “V.II” and “V.III” are both mesmerising pieces of post-rock with such calming momentum that leads you into a dream-like state. The soothing 25-minute finale ‘V.VII’ signals the sun slowly going below the horizon, as it drifts away seeming less than half of its time span with playful layered guitar grooves and pounding drums that grows right up until the final few seconds.
Some might consider ‘V’ to be too long for an album, but Papir creates such hypnotizing beauty that time just passes by when you listen to it without even noticing.
