7/10 Tom Customer review, 24th May 2018

Released two years after the breakout success of Everything Must Go, the Manic Street Preachers' fifth album This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours is notable for it's more sombre tone and its softer edges, dealing with topics like depression, the Spanish Civil War, heartbreak, and cheerily enough, the Moors murderers. This was also the first album for which Nicky Wire wrote all the lyrics himself (having previous shared lyrical duties with the sadly departed Richie Edwards) and he does well to step out of Richie's shadow. Some of the band's biggest hits came from this album, including "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next", "You Stole the Sun From My Heart" and "Tsunami" but the interest really lies in some of the more reflective songs such as the beautiful "My Little Empire", "Black Dog on My Shoulder" and the subdued "I'm Not Working".

It's strange to think of an album like this being a massive hit now, which probably says a fair bit about the success of its multi-coloured, full-bodied predecessor Everything Must Go.
