After her acclaimed January Sun EP Moscow based producer Kedr Livanskiy returns to the 2MR label for her debut full length album. A solo artist with a love of synthesizers and experiments with a mix of NEU! motorik krautrock, Boards Of Canada ambience and Grimes esque pop. Dreamy and atmospheric but with a sense of urgency.

I swear I was sat in this very position yesterday listening to Zola Jesus and reminiscing about the time I went to the Lake District. Today I am in the same chair listening to something that sounds like Zola Jesus reminiscing about the time I was sat in a chair listening to Zola Jesus. Kedr Livanskiy is a lady from Russia who sounds a lot like Zola Jesus. She dabbles in the same kind of gothy dark wave - her voice has less foghorn to it and her synths are so rudimentary that at times they sound like they are played by a dog's paw.
There's a nice softness to her sound which suggests a lot of listening to Boards of Canada but this is as dark as Dead Can Dance and as bleak as This Mortal Coil. I was rather fascinated by the fact that Cleaner From Venus Martin Newell pops up on ACDC but he seems to be just doing spoken word stuff over some wobbly synth so I kind of gave up on it. Maybe the track went somewhere - maybe it didn't.
I have to admit on a label curated by people from Captured Tracks and Italians Do It Better I expected...um.. better. There's some moments I really like such as the four four thump and cotton wool pads of 'Za Oknom Vesna' - actually this is the best thing here by a mile and is making me want to give the other tracks another chance. But no I'll stick with my initial assessment of rudimentary dark wave that will appeal to fans of..um.. Zola Jesus.
