A major new work from sonic explorer and yoga fanatic Laraaji. A shimmering two track experiment on the tonalities of the gong as he shifts the sound of this most round of instruments through various electronic processes. This single LP will get you ready for the more extensive 'Bring On The Sun' which follows on later.
9/10 Laurie Staff review, 21 September 2017
Oh, how I long to be elsewhere right now. Far, far away, away from stress, the rushed world of music commerce, lying on a cloud next to a huge stereo. I’ve just popped one of Laraaji’s new meditations into the CD player and while it reads a realistic 26 minute running time, I’ll have to review it in half that time while frantically typing. Oh, life.
No time to get immersed then - onto some descriptions. You know gongs, right? A strange combination of harmonics, they are, relaxing but ultimately dissonant and powerful. Laraaji has here made a whole piece split into 2 parts just using a massive gong, coaxing out varied rumbling drones and ‘chord changes’ (if you can call them that) from the metal. If you’re only used to Laraaji in blissed-out zither mode, then this’ll be a shocker, the initial 5 minutes being a cacophonous mass of bassy trundles. This then narrows to some single tones, almost sounding like a distant horn on a beautiful day before the clouds roll in again and you’re back in the apocalypse.
I have no idea how he manages to pull so many differing sounds from the thing. My mum used to use a gong as the loudest possible way to get us all to the table to eat, little did she know, there are hidden depths to the instrument that only someone like Larry G can find. Oh, I just read that he’s got some electronics behind him, good on ya lad. I’d probably have to say that this is one of my favourites from him, I had no idea he had this level of droney murk in his soul. Oh and just when I thought it was all darkness, a beautiful soaring voice enters. Well I never.
