Ah El Goodo. Named of course after the Big Star song, El Goodo are a Welsh six piece who blend all manner of '60s influences particularly spaghetti westerns to create a form of nostalgic, cinematic pop that references Super Furry Animals, Lee Hazlewood, Love and Ennio Morricone. Twangy and promising.
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 06 September 2017
Actual good music.
It probably helps El Goodo that I played this album straight after the Alex Cameron horror show and so in an instant reminded me that despite everything I still actually like music. They have an immediately endearing sound that on 'I Sit and Wonder' lands midway between Super Furry Animals and Lee Hazlewood with all kinds of mariachi horns parping. On 'It Makes Me Wonder' they nick a Teenage Fanclub melody and orchestrate it with some lovely uplifting strings and on 'September' they write the sort of tune Graham Gouldman would once have written and offered up to the Hollies.
Throughout it showcases classic 60s influenced pop songwriting with the sort of twangy cinematic feel that recalls Spaghetti westerns but more often than not they marry these to some rather excellent melodies that could be comparable to other Welsh songwriters such as H.Hawkline and Cate Le Bon. But El Goodo have a wider sonic palette to work from and this creates a really authentic album of vintage pop stylings. Unlike other 60's influenced acts they seem to have been dragged blinking and screaming out of that decade. They have no place in 2017 and that's the biggest compliment I can pay them.
