An eleven piece record from London’s very own The Last Dinosaur. A collection of songs written about lead singer, Jamie Cameron’s, youth and the struggles he faced as he powered through in his teenage years. The Nothing is possibly the right title for this record as it captures melancholy and sadness at its very peak. A heartbreaking collection of tracks available on Vinyl LP and CD.

We're trying. We're trying hard to find you good music amidst the barrels of slop we must wade through each day. Following a morning in which I want to smash my head against the uselessness of it all I get recommended this record by the Last Dinosaur. It's a hushed acoustic based album of confessional autumn hued songs that are played a lovingly delicate manner. Many influences spring to mind  - Sparklehorse, By the Fireside, Belle and Sebastien, Talk Talk, Red House Painters, the Leisure Society but it generally all rolls into something quite original.

The album has an orchestrated beauty that takes in rolling pianos and haunting violins but is also not afraid to add in a rousing chorus. In fact the sometimes singalong type choruses on 'All My Faith' and 'We'll Greet Death' are my only gripe with the album but that's just me and this is exactly the sort of thing that could transcend the album into acceptance to an audience beyond that of navel gazing folk songwriter types. If it sometimes becomes all a bit 'Arcade Fire' this is tempered with a craftsman-like approach to the songs which blends neo-classical arrangements with emotional confessional songwriting.

It's an emotional rollercoaster which addresses tragic events in the teenage years of singer Jamie Cameron - his whispered vocals are embedded within the lush guitars and heavenly strings but are full of unsettling revelations. It's one of the albums that just needs to be heard and once it finds its audience (like this years similarly impressive Cigarettes After Sex record) it could become one of those crossover sad records. See also: 'For Emma Forever Ago', 'Benji'.

Definitely listen if you are after something thought provoking, beautiful and heartstrings tugging.
