I just had to check this record out after reading the words “Pure live unapologetic psychic schism West Coast hardware acid.” Who wouldn’t?
HOM is the solo techno project of Seattle artist Ashley P. Svn who’s been part of the Bay Area and Pacific Northwest underground over the years, recording and performing with UV Acid and Thee Source. ‘A$X’ opens with ‘Xanoptor’ which bubbles and snakes along for just under twelve minutes and flows along much more freely than you’re average, rigid loop based techno cut and is more psychedelic than much of the greyscale stuff coming out of Europe. It grooves and bleeps along in hypnotizing fashion with deep bass and subtle peaks and troughs.
Over on the flip ‘Xeremonial’ gets to work with an infectious bassline, stuttering drum machine and bleeping melodies. It builds into what promises to be an intense climax then takes an unexpected swerve where the bassline switches gear - the sum of which is like some sort of futuristic, mutant take on classic UK Bleep ‘n’ Bass and would really blast a dancefloor into a frenzy. ‘MT-Xyn’ is similarly potent dancefloor fuel with it’s slightly dubby, acidic, searching, hypnotic groove. All tracks are tight enough to keep dancers locked in, but have a refreshing energy that’s captured in tweaking things live without wandering into needless noodling. This makes the record both functional and vibrant. A sexy looking thing it is too - with artwork and design by Brandon Nickell. Edition of 250 copies printed with pink-foil stamped art on fluorescent green jackets. Mastered by Thomas Dimuzio at Gench Studios in San Francisco.
