8/10 Tom Customer review, 22nd May 2018
Released the year after his lovable debut The College Dropout, Late Registration sold almost twice as many copies in its first week which says a lot about the astronomical rise of Kanye West from in-house beatmaker, to backpacker rapper, to superstar all-rounder. Is Late Registration a better album that The College Dropout? Yes and no. Yes because it takes big steps in new musical directions with the assistance of co-producer Jon Brion, and because it tackles more introspective/philosophical questions on the likes of "Drive Slow", "Roses", "My Way Home", and "Crack Music". No because it doesn't have the same sense of warmth and joy that The College Dropout had. The success of singles "Gold Digger", "Touch the Sky" and "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" catapulted Kanye further and further into the limelight for better or for worse, making him a household name. After this album he began to do away with his distinctive chipmunk soul production style in favour of the synth-heavy, house-inspired music that would make up his third album Graduation.
