San Franciscan psychedelic trippy guys Carlton Melton unleash the first fruits of their new jams with this 25 minute three track EP. This is the first offering since Out To Sea and should showcase further cosmic journeys this time augmented by Phil Manley (Fucking Champs etc) in the production chair.

8/10 Staff review, 10 August 2017

The council of psychedelia known as Carlton Melton unleash another slab of wax and have the audacity to call it an EP. It’s twenty five minutes long, that I’ll grant you, but over three tracks. Psych rock is a different world, of course, and Carlton Melton have always needed a lot of time to stretch out. They’re excused because opener “Memory” is maybe the most beautiful thing they’ve ever put out, a meditation made against but also in conjunction with all their inhibitions -- the same basic band plays this spacey, hypnotic guitar tune, but they do so in a whisper of unison, brushing drums against gorgeously hushed guitar work that could easily exist in the first half of an Explosions In The Sky song.

This might actually be how all Carlton Melton songs should sound -- “The Warbler” fixed a drone figure and a hibernating drumbeat into its backdrop and lets guitar notes amble and grow in the fore, taking what sounds like the influence of absent-minded stargazing guitarist Loren Connors. It’s only on the final self-titled track that the band dive into red-blooded psychedelia, invoking a heavy article of distortion and a frenzied drumbeat in order to inaugurate a wahing guitar solo. It’s fine. Those first two tracks though? Dozy midweek treasures.
